Belvidere’s Varsity Softball team holds their place within the top half of the NIC-10 conference at third place and have their sights set on regionals.
The highlight of the season so far is Amber Wisely throwing a perfect game against Rockford East on April 20th.
“After pitching the perfect game, I didn’t realize right away, but once I did it was very exciting and a big accomplishment,” said Junior Amber Wisely. “I couldn’t have done it without my team, they played really good defense and put up lots of runs offensively.
“I think it shows that Belvidere isn’t always an underdog like lots of people believe, and that anyone who has the right mindset can accomplish things they might not have thought they could.”
Throughout Wisely’s perfect game against East, the team’s hitting and defensive strengths were very apparent.
“This team works together very well,” said Head Coach Amy Douglas. “We hold each other accountable when someone isn’t doing their part of being a teammate and we have a great family culture.”
The girls have a record of 6-6, taking the win over five conference teams including Rockford Auburn, Hononegah, Boylan Catholic, Rockford East, and Guilford.
“It’s a big accomplishment to be third in conference at the moment; we hope to improve in the rankings and get up to first or second,” said Senior Kennedy Coryell. “For right now I’m pretty happy with where we stand, and it’s pretty great that Belvidere is up there in the rankings.”
With only a little over a month left of the season, the team hopes to move their way further up the NIC-10 standings to either first or second place.
“I think our greatest strength is the fact that we’re all super close, we’re not teammates or friends, we’re a family,” said senior McKenna Morris. “We’re all super close and get along super well, it’s a really good bond out there.”
