BHS Scholastic Bowl heads to nationals


Belvidere High School Scholastic Bowl team won a huge victory at the beginning of the year, David Riley Memorial Kickoff held in Belvidere leading them to play nationals on May 24.

On May 24th, lead by coach Mr.Stuart Teso-Warner, assisted by Mr. Joshua Tatman, BHS Scholastic Bowl team will be going up against top quiz bowl teams across the United States.

National Academic Quiz Tournaments is held in Atlanta and goes through the middle school to college level. Teams participating may include multiple former national champions.

“Belvidere may face familiar foes in Atlanta, as Hononegah (from Rockton), Rockford Auburn, and Winnebago will also be attending,” Said Warner.

Belvidere has been to nationals two times in the past, and some of the team’s current members have visited nationals before, Senior Nicholas Larson and Junior Isaiah Lopez competed in the 2017 High School National Championship Tournament.

“Without Nick Larson, we would not be recognized like this, but our veterans, like Kai Bonsol, Isaiah Lopez, James Wiedow and Kevin Jenks have come through for us in clutch situations, and two of our newbies, Matthew Colson and Aston Martin have shown a lot of promise,” Tatman said.

BHS Scholastic Bowl competed against Auburn May 7th and received second place, rewarded with scholarship money that was split along the team and a trophy.
