The Nun brings biggest horror weekend

The Nun brings biggest horror weekend

Aurora Rodriguez, Staff Writer

The Nun, a thriller starring Taissa Farmiga and Bonnie Aarons has the biggest opening weekend for a horror movie in 2018.

The movie takes place in St. Carta, Romania in 1952 and follows a priest and a novitiate. The pair are sent by the Vatican to investigate the death of a young nun.

The Nun has a beautiful, gothic monastery as the main setting for the duration of the film that made the movie feel more realistic. Being a horror movie however, many of the more interesting scenes take place at night, not leaving much time for you to take in the beauty of the place of course.

As the movie goes on, the pieces of The Conjuring puzzle if you will, begins to fit together. However, they cleverly leave the final and major missing piece at the very end of the movie, which can make you gather anticipation or become incredibly impatient. Nonetheless, the writers did a great job tying in pieces of the other movies as well as creating a good backstory, even tying in actual mythology and religious ideas.

This particular horror movie was filled with mostly great jump scares and that was about it. The horror aspect was not well balanced out between story and visuals. Some of the scenes meant to come off as scary instead came off as somewhat corny. Due to the lack of big scares, this makes The Nun more of a movie for horror fans that love a good story rather than your average gore and chaos.

While lacking in some areas, the movie itself is still worth the time to go and see. You can go see The Nun at AMC Showplace 16 in Rockford and at AMC Showplace Machesney Park 14. Keep in mind that the movie is Rated R.

Overall, I rate this movie a 7/10 stars.
