The BHS cheer team competed in the NIC-10 conference competition at Harlem High School on Jan. 18.

The team ended up taking sixth place with a score of 68.82. This was upsetting to most of the team members after the team took third in conference the year before.

“Most teams will normally say, ‘Everyone has that one bad routine each year.’ It is unfortunate that Conference was the competition in which that happened for us. We are hoping that with some changes, we will be able to use this as a slingshot towards sectionals as a ‘ This is what we don’t want to do again’ type of lesson, and continue our quest towards reaching state,” said Assistant Varsity coach Mr. Sam Peters.

This year the Bucs have had several new faces on the team after four of their teammates graduated last year.

“It was amazing to get the opportunity to be on varsity my first year of cheer. I hope that at our next competition we hit all of our skills and go out there with confidence, and we can walk away saying that we were happy with how we performed,” said sophomore Alexis Vermies.

After what was not one of the team’s best performances, the Bucs seem quite confident to perform at Sectionals. They hope to do much better, and show the crowd how talented they really are.

“Although our performance did not go the way we had hoped, we still went out there and kept our spirits up throughout the performance. It’s really sad to see this season coming to an end especially because I’m a senior, but I know that this program will continue on, and I can’t wait to cheer them on in the future,” said senior Madalynn Visser.

The Bucs have one last competition at Belvidere North High School on Saturday Jan. 27, so be sure to come out and support them at Sectionals!
